A Little bit about Sabana de la Mar and Hato Mayor:
The city of Sabana de la Mar is a municipality in the province of Hato Mayor. It is located 44 kilometers from the provincial capital of Hato Mayor del Rey and 154 kilometers from the city of Santo Domingo. Bordered on the north with Bahia de Samana, in the south with the municipalities of El Valle y Hato Mayor del Rey, in the east with the municipalities of Miches and El Seibo and in the west with the provinces of Monte Plata and Samana.
Sabana de la Mar was founded in 1760 with families from the Canary Islands. It was elevated to the category of municipality in 1876 belonging to the Distrito Marítimo (Provincia) de Samaná. Later the municipality would be transferred to the province of El Seibo. On December 3, 1984, it was transferred to the province of Hato Mayor.
The main economic activities of the municipality of Sabana de la Mar are agriculture and fishing. Tourism has increased in the last few years with visitors to the Parque Nacional Los Haitíses.
